CABARETE, Dominican Republic – September 19, 2025
Day 3 of the Master of the Ocean 2025 tested athletes with tricky conditions of 2 to 4-foot waves that were choppy and unpredictable. Despite the challenges, the Overall Surf and SUP athletes rose to the occasion, showing resilience, adaptability, and determination in a day where stamina proved as important as style.
The morning opened with heats that quickly revealed the depth of talent in the field. Maxime L’Huillier stunned the crowd by elevating his surfing level beyond expectations, securing first place in his heat with dynamic wave selection and sharp maneuvers. His performance highlighted how competitors continue to push their limits across multiple disciplines.
Creativity was also on display as athletes sought out the most versatile equipment for the shifting conditions. One of the most daring moves came from Jerónimo Abogado of Mexico, who impressed the judges and crowd by first taking on the lefts with his foil, then switching seamlessly to a shortboard — a bold demonstration of versatility and risk-taking that embodies the spirit of Master of the Ocean.
The demanding format of Overall heats with repechage rounds meant athletes surfed multiple back-to-back sessions in both surf and SUP. Endurance became the deciding factor, as those who could sustain energy and precision across several heats advanced through the day.
By afternoon, anticipation built for possible Wingfoil, Kite, and Windsurf action, but with the wind not cooperating, nature dictated the close of competition. Still, the day was far from uneventful: it showcased how athletes adapt under pressure, and how grit and stamina are as central to Master of the Ocean as spectacular tricks and maneuvers.
Spectators left Cabarete Beach inspired by the determination of the competitors and eager for the return of wind-driven disciplines in the coming days.
Looking ahead, Day 4 is expected to bring stronger winds, opening the door for heats in Wingfoil, Kite, and Windsurf, alongside continued battles in Surf and SUP Overall. With endurance already tested on Day 3, athletes now prepare for the explosive aerial action that the event is famous for.
To close out the day, athletes were warmly welcomed to the Kite Beach Watersports Center by local rider Samuel Pérez-Hults, who hosted a family-cooked BBQ party. The evening gathering brought together athletes, organizers, and friends in true Cabarete style — with good food, music, and camaraderie after a demanding day on the water.
