Master of the Ocean 2025 Opens with High Energy and Strong Performances

Wing Foiling and Kitesurfing Heats Kick Off Competition in Cabarete with Taino Blessing

CABARETE, Dominican Republic – September 17, 2025

The 20th edition of Master of the Ocean launched in grand style with a vibrant Opening Ceremony and the first rounds of competition in Cabarete. Athletes introduced themselves to the international crowd, setting the tone for a week of high-level watersports action blending surf, wind, and culture.

As the wind strengthened around midday, the sea suddenly started lining up favorable wind and waves, creating the perfect setup for the first Overall Wing Foiling heats. Four competitive heats were completed by 2:00 pm, with only two riders from each advancing to the next round. Makani Andrews, Yannick Mittas, Samuel Pérez-Hults, J.S Lena, Jan Malte Claus, Francis González, Maxime L’Huillier, and Jose Luis Ciriaco all secured their spots in the next stage after displaying sharp technical skills and control in dynamic conditions.

After a short break, the action shifted to the Overall Kitesurfing heats, where the wind climbed close to 20 knots, allowing riders to unleash powerful aerials and stylish wave riding. The opening round produced a string of memorable performances, with Brian Talma and Yannick Mittas advancing from Heat 1; Samuel Pérez-Hults and J.S Lena from Heat 2; Jerónimo Abogado and Francis González from Heat 3; and José Luis Ciriaco and Maxime L’Huillier from Heat 4. Each heat was packed with intensity, as only two riders could progress, and the level of competition remained consistently high.

Adding to the day’s spirit was a moving Taíno blessing ceremony led by Meri Jane Okani, joined by event founder Marcus Bohm, communications director Patricia Hiraldo, Hawaiian athletes, and Barbadian waterman Brian Talma. Together, they offered tropical fruits and flowers to Yokahú, the Taíno goddess of the sea, in gratitude and in hopes of favorable wind and waves throughout the event.

Judges praised both the sportsmanship and the technical quality of the athletes, noting that the 20th edition has brought together one of the most diverse and talented fields yet.

Spectators later gathered at Coconuts Restaurant to celebrate the day’s results, where the atmosphere was filled with music, community spirit, and excitement for the coming rounds.

Looking ahead, tomorrow’s forecast suggests steady winds and building swell, promising ideal conditions for Overall Surf and Windsurf heats, alongside the continuation of Wing Foil and Kite battles. With the first cuts made, anticipation is building for even more explosive action on Day 2.

Stay tuned for more world-class watersports action at Master of the Ocean 2025!
